I'm sorry...but I did not get 10 squares and a curve out of either of =
those
two sounds...the faster one was simply too fast to grab anything but a
curvature motion....the first one indicated something about individual
things in the picture....but I have no clue what....

Take care,
Sina

Hi Will and all,

I must admit that I do not really understand the proposed concepts, but
where you say about key stages in development

 > 1. Creation of a basic system to determine whether the concept works=20
for still images.

I propose you use one of my demonstration images for reference to show =
how
your method works out in practice. The greyscale GIF image is at the =
direct
image URL

   http://www.seeingwithsound.com/voiscopebw.gif

while you can listen to its two second WAV soundscape at

   http://www.seeingwithsound.com/voiscopebw2.wav

or its faster one second WAV soundscape at the direct URL

   http://www.seeingwithsound.com/voiscopebw.wav

Set your media player to loop the soundscape such that you
can move your mental focus around to hear out the details.
Note that sighted people move their gaze direction through
eye saccades to analyze the details of the image, so they
too apply some kind of scanning. Of course The vOICe also includes =
options
for zoom and for moving the zoomed view around with your arrow keys, but =
we
need not go into that.

I hope you will see/hear the bright curve and ten little
bright squares on a dark grey background, and I will be
very interested in how you will map this onto something non-sequential
(non-scanning) that can be conveyed much faster than in one second. I =
think
this cannot be done in any intuitive way, but this is an invitation for =
you
and others to try and come up with a sound that does that.

It would be a breakthrough, because we all want this, and that's why I =
am
here.

Best wishes,

Peter Meijer
