Hi all, My company has decided to have a chat with all tech writers about career paths. This is because: a) there is no career path established at the moment; and b) it looks like the perception is that the next step is to become an editor. Kirsty (one of the technical editors in the company) asked the question about career paths. She is currently in the USA attending the STC conference but has already given her opinion to our HR account manager. We are supposed to have a meeting about this on Wednesday. I have already canvassed the opinions of Jean Weber and Janet Taylor and tried Jill Nocholson, however, she is also in the US. I would like to have as many of you as possible giving me your opinions. I have deliberately not sent this to the austechwriters list as (to be frank) I really do not want to have to read thousands of emails, most of which full of diatribe and one-upmanship (maybe harsh, but still may opinion on what a lot of the members of the list do). So, can you please do me three favours: a) let me know what you think is a career path for a technical writer; b) send your answers direct to me (I would prefer if your answers were not influenced by someone else's opinion; and c) excuse any typing mistakes--it is latish on a Sunday evening, I am tired, and (I confess) I have had a couple of glasses of wine! I will compile all the answers, put them together with what comes out in the meeting on Wed and let you all know what people (in Qld, at least) feel--promise. Thanks for that! I hope to see youse (and no, it is NOT a spelling mistake) all in our next meeting! Cheers, Ana __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier.
