Geoff, I can't come because I'll be in the USA that day.

I don't know about travel times, because I am from (very far) out of town,
but I can suggest some accommodation.

I stay at a hotel on Spring Hill when I'm in Brisbane. I generally stay at
the Goodearth; a friend has stayed at the Soho. These two renovated
establishments are next door to each other on Wickham Terrace near the
corner of Upper Albert Street in Spring Hill. Nothing fancy, but
comfortable enough (my main criterion is a good bed and a quiet room). You
can book either hotel on any of the "last minute" booking sites like
NeedItNow, WotIf, Quickbeds, and Check-in. (Commercial announcement: If you
use my affiliate link to Check-in, I'd appreciate it, and their price is
usually the same as the other booking services for the same rooms, with no
booking fee. http://www.check-in.com.au?affprog=avlk Goodearth is showing
$69 for that night; Soho is showing $62.)

To get there from the city, I walk up Albert Street; it's not far, but
somewhat steep and goes alongside a park. If you feel uncomfortable about
safety at night, you can take a taxi for around $6 from the city. Still
good value and cheaper than a lot of the closer hotels.

To expand on Geoff's instructions (locals are always hopeless at
instructions <grin>), the Pancake Manor is at 18 Charlotte Street, near the
corner of George Street. (Charlotte parallels Elizabeth and Queen Streets
and is just south from the casino.)
