SPEED UP MY PC. LI Utilities has put together one small program called=20
SpeedUpMyPC for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP that offers, in their words, "all =
the=20
features you could ever need to clean up your system, monitor resources, =

and improve performance." It monitors and frees up RAM; handles CPU =
usage=20
by assigning more resources where needed to prevent crashes; monitors=20
bandwidth and optimizes Internet connection and browser settings to =
improve=20
load times; removes unnecessary background tasks and thereby frees=20
resources; prevents crashes by terminating misbehaving applications=20
instantly, blocks and logs annoying popups; oversees disk load, read and =

write operations, and tests disk performance; scans your system for =
spyware=20
and adware and removes the stuff from your computer; and, in general,=20
provides a detailed system overview including memory, CPU, and network=20
information. That's just a tip of the iceberg and you can read more =
about=20
SpeedUpMyPC at http://www.liutilities.com/products/speedupmypc/ .  =
Better=20
yet, you can get your own copy at a 25% discount if you order it at the=20
Neat Net Tricks Store, http://www.NeatNetTricks.com/store . It carries =
a=20
full 30-day money back guarantee if you're not satisfied with it, and =
your=20
computer will thank you.

. . . . .

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Neat Net Tricks is now available in RSS format in addition to the =
familiar=20
email publication you are now reading. NNT provides a free syndicated=20
graphics-enriched feed via an RSS reader with which you can access our=20
content whenever you wish, without the problems inherent in email-based=20
newsletters (e.g., spam filters, blacklists, server problems, outages,=20
etc.) How do you get the RSS version? Full details are=20
at  http://www.NeatNetTricks.com/rss.htm .

. . . . .

01. AN AFFORDABLE DIAGNOSTIC. If I were to tell you that, for less than =

$20, you can get software that comes with free, unlimited lifetime=20
technical support via email, phone, fax, or mail; that can be upgraded =
for=20
life, and stands alone on its own self-booting disk without any=20
installation on your system, you'd ask, "yeah, but what does it do?" =
Well,=20
for starters, it runs over 200 tests and functions, identifies and tests =

any size hard drive, finds and repairs logically corrupted sectors, =
finds=20
and reassigns (replaces) physically bad sectors, clarifies hardware =
versus=20
software issues, supports Intel Pentium IV, III, II, I, 486, 386, 286,=20
8088, 8086, and compatible AMD and Cyrix-based PCs, and can even boot =
and=20
test a PC with NO hard drive. We're talking about #1-TuffTEST-Pro PC=20
Diagnostic and this is one item you need within arm's reach of your=20
computer. Its user-friendly menu-driven structure is easy to learn and =
you=20
don't have to be a whiz to quickly zero in on a problem. The whole=20
download of 747 KB takes but 3-4 minutes even on a slow 28.8 Internet=20
connection and in that download is included a 75+ page User=20
Handbook. Everything this tool does won't fit in this newsletter, but =
you=20
can read lots more at http://www.lab.to/nnt/230 and -- get this -- PC=20
Diagnostic is letting NNT readers take one-third off the price and get=20
TuffTEST Pro for just $19.95.

02. QUICK ROUTE TO SECURITY. Instead of navigating through =
Tools|Internet=20
Options|Security in Internet Explorer 6 to change your security =
settings,=20
simply double click on the Internet icon on the right side of IE's =
status=20
bar, on the bottom of the IE window.

03. MOUSE LOCATOR. Windows XP makes it easy to locate your cursor by=20
touching the CTRL key. To enable the feature, go to Start|Control Panel =

and click the Mouse icon. Select the Mouse Properties and Pointer =
Options=20
tabs and check "Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key".

04. KEYBOARD NAVIGATION. Of course you can surf forward and back with =
your=20
mouse by clicking on the Forward and Back buttons. But to give your =
mouse=20
a rest and use the keyboard, try holding the ALT key down and pressing =
the=20
left arrow key to go back, or the right arrow key to go forward.

05. CONSTANT FONT. Fonts may come and fonts may go, but the size =
changes=20
to whatever is called for in the Web site you visit. If this bothers =
you,=20
in Internet Explorer, go to Tools|Internet Options and in the General =
tab=20
click on Accessibility, then check the option for "Ignore font sizes=20
specified on Web pages".

06. RESTORING PREVIOUS FOLDERS. If you'd like the folder you working in =
to=20
remain open when you shut down and restart later, go to Windows Explorer =
in=20
XP, select Tools|Folder Options and the View tab. In Advanced Settings, =

check the option for "Restore previous folders at logon."

07. 123 PASSWORD RECOVERY. This free utility allows you to recover=20
passwords that are typically hidden under a row of asterisks by simply=20
dragging the cursor over the password field. Download at=20
http://www.webattack.com/get/123pwrecovery.shtml .

08. NEAT NET NIFTY: THE WONDER OF IT ALL. Neat Net Tricks pauses on=20
occasion to recognize a nifty web site and recommend your visit. Set =
aside=20
some time to explore the site and enjoy it. Sites are identified as =
"Nifty"=20
when their all-around content, originality, interest, variety, and=20
graphical presentation have earned this award. At the NNT Web site,=20
http://www.NeatNetTricks.com (at the "What's New" page), you'll find =
nearly=20
three-dozen Nifties in the nearly 8 years NNT has been published.

Now joining this prestigious company is the site at=20
http://wonderofitall.com which asks, very eloquently, "Do you ever =
wonder=20
at the wonder of it all?"

If you have a recommended Nifty that is predominantly non-commercial, =
let=20
us know at jteems@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx .

09. SECOND COPY is a backup utility designed for Windows=20
9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP. It makes a backup of your data files to another=20
directory, disk, or computer across the network. It then monitors the=20
source files and keeps the backup updated with new or changed files and=20
runs in the background with no user interaction. Our Software Review =
Panel=20
put Second Copy to the test and their report is at the NNT Web site,=20
http://www.NeatNetTricks.com (click on Software Reviews when you get =
there.)

NEXT WEEK IN NNT PREMIUM: Convert your own handwriting to fonts you can =

use in your word processing and graphics programs. Understand more =
about=20
the programs running in the background and what security risks are=20
involved. Try a tip for configuring Windows XP and a utility that =
enables=20
renaming large groups of files. Customize email with its own =
distinctive=20
ring assigned each correspondent. Find what registry entries are =
pointing=20
to nowhere and clean them out. And our feature suggests that "chain=20
letters breed like rats." This is just one of 24 informative issues, =
yours=20
for an entire year for just $10 at the NNT Store,=20
http://www.NeatNetTricks.com/store.
