I will be taking the session on measurements in Nasik. Given three hours,
planning to do only measurement of length and a little bit of measurement
of area.
Here is the plan:
Measurement:
1. Use of non-standard units; need for standard units; bit of history,
evolution of the SI units.
2. Measurement of length - using inch-tape and scale - to bring out the
factor of least count (this is why I need the inch tape to have only half
cm markings, not mm).
3. Exercise in measurement (length) to bring out the need for precautions.
4. Exercise in measurement (length) to bring out the factor of variations
in measurement; how to overcome this - taking an average of a number of
measurements.
5. Taking averages will bring us to the next important factor - the
importance of significant figures in measurements.
6. To stress this, we then go on to measurement of area - least count and
significant figures to be the main emphasis. Also do measurement of area of
regular and irregular figures (if there is time).
And the kit-list:
1. Inch-tape with 1/2 cm least count - 12 nos.
2. 1/2 metre or metre scales - 12 nos.
3. Graph paper - 350 sheets.
(Physics means the kit-list is so easy! Am just going to work on the
kit-list for the session on food with Seema and it is going to be such a
pain - :-( !!!)
