Next LCT Centre Online Roundtable: November 4th – **7 pm SYD**

Hooking participants into professional development
Anna Maria Hipkiss, Anna-Vera Meidell Sigsgaard, Ann-Christin Randahl
From the LCT-Nordic group

Professional development is a key part of all kinds of work in societies
characterized by calls for ‘lifelong learning’. In education, professional
development is endemic but highly variable in what they achieve. In this
roundtable we explore how three different professional development projects in
Sweden and Denmark provide different affordances for the teachers involved. In
all three projects, teachers are meant to improve their teaching by becoming
more cognizant of applying theory in their teaching (e.g. literacy in science
or social studies lessons). In effect they are expected to make links between
the specialized knowledge they possess and that of the professional development
program they are participating in. We draw on Specialization, Semantics and
Autonomy to look at examples of teacher planning conversations, surveys,
interviews and classroom observation data, including lesson activities and
teaching materials. We explore the different ways in which teachers understand
the professional development and the extent to which that development empowers
them as agents of positive change. From our analyses we illustrate why certain
professional development initiatives may be more successful while others, are
less so.
