Hi Shermin,

I just checked the settings and workings of freelists, and they do allow
more than 1 moderator and/or admin. So it would be great (and ideal) if you
are also admin and moderator. As I started the list and am admin currently,
I will need to add you in as an admin and moderator. So please confirm and
I will do the needful.

Thanks,
Varun

Hi Varun,

I got the message, so that seems to work. There are a couple of things
I'd like to know which is whether members can customize their settings -
does it allow a digests? Also, does it allow moderation? Lastly, the list
should be exclusive to specialist group members, so just anyone should not
be able to subscribe via the site.

VRG: Yes every member can customize their settings once they log in. The
options include opting to receive a digest instead of every email sent to
the list.

There is an option for moderation (for the entire list) whereby emails
sent first come to the admin and the admin needs to okay it before it goes
out. Is that what you meant? I left the moderation option turned off as I
think members should be free to post to the group without a moderator
deciding whether or not their email should be passed on.

The subscription options are as follows:

Open: Anyone can subscribe at any time
» Closed: No one is allowed to subscribe. The administrator has to add
users manually, either through email, or through the web interface.
» Confirm: Anyone can subscribe, but they're first sent a confirmation
email that they must reply to. If they don't reply, they aren't subscribed.
This helps prevent getting subscribers that didn't want to be subscribed.

I had left it as 'Confirm' when I sent you the invitation. But I obviously
agree with you that the list should be exclusive to members of AsESG. I
have therefore changed it to 'Closed'. I will handle the adding in of users
once the list is updated by Vivek.

The list is also a 'Closed-post' list, which means that people that are
not a part of the list cannot post on it.

Once we've got those answers I think we should probably put it to Vivek
and discuss how to run it. It would be too cumbersome to discuss that with
the whole group. I take it he is also working on updating the list, so we
could add everyone in when that's finalized. Hopefully we don't have to
revisit the whole question of what people's preferences are, since the poll
results are there. But we might want to ask whether people want moderation
and set up the landing page before unveiling - e.g. with info on how to
subscribe, unsubscribe etc.

VRG: If we agree to keep the moderation option turned off, there probably
won't be too much running of the list per se (apart from the initial adding
on of members). Members will be free to post to the list with everybody
receiving these emails (or a digest) as per personalized settings they
choose for themselves. So unless I am missing something, there may not be
much to discuss with Vivek vis-a-vis the running of the list I think. What
are your thoughts on it?

The idea of having a landing page with all relevant information, including
how a member can unsubscribe is a good one. I will get that ready by the
time we are ready for the 'grand unveiling'! :)

Thanks for following this up. I'm happy to be admin or follow up with the
freelists admins on these questions as well if you've got your hands full.

VRG: Thanks for offering Shermin. I don't think it should be too much
trouble so I am happy to be admin. But I hope to work with you, if the list
needs to be run/moderated in some form.

If the above answers seem fine to you and you agree with what I have said,
do you want to go ahead and write to Vivek? I am happy to do so as well, if
you would like.

Best,
Shermin

Hi Shermin,

This seems to be working fine. As a final test, I am replying to the
list rather than your personal email. If you get this, then we are probably
good to go in terms of 'unveiling' the list to the larger group and Vivek.
How do you suggest we go about doing that? What I mean is, do we want to
first share the list with Vivek or just do it at one go?

If all member email addresses are available, then I can even ask the
freelists admin folks to add them as opposed to each member doing what you
did to sign up.

Let me know.

Cheers,
Varun
