Dear Nick,
On my computer, XChars is launched when hitting the Windows key and X
simultaneously, no matter what program is running already.
However, this is due to !HID, a priceless utility, written by Paul Reuvers
(http://www.xat.nl/en/riscos/sw/usb/hid/index.htm). It's not entirely free,
but definitely worth more than every penny (just a few).
