The answer is simple: PhotoDesk does not cope with Alpha Sprites, not 
even on versions of RISC OS that support them (Select). Thump uses OS 
routines to display images, so it renders them correctly, but only on 
versions of RISC OS that support them.

Not really much space in the Info Bar. In the long run there will be a 
button bar on which you can place such buttons.
