Thankyou Martin for the explanation. It would indeed be nice if 
Artworks could cope with larger page sizes. For family trees the 
example quoted isn't the largest possible by any means (it would be 
nice to be able to handle a maximum width of 30,000mm).

Yes, this indeed works fine for the example quoted. The scaled down 
version can be saved as a pdf and using !PDF to view it (at an 
appropriate scaling) produced a very readable file. However I tried 
the same trick with a bigger tree (30,000mm wide), which Artworks 
handled ok, but !PDF didn't allow sufficient scaling of the resulting 
pdf (it's limited to 800%) for the file to be acceptably readable. 
(note: Adobe Reader 8 does allow sufficient magnification to enable 
the pdf to be read easily, but my experiments with GView on RISC OS 
failed to produce a readable file).
