If you have DPlngScan, you can do it in one operation.

You can then drag straight out of DPlngScan into the
Artworks window.

I just knew there would be a simpler way than mine. :-(

In fact, I was nearly there before my first post but I
only changed it to 8bpp. My brain said that that was
enough and, fool that I am, I believed it.

Your brain was right,

That'll be a first!!!

but it forgot to tell you that you have to switch off the
"New sprites" configuration option in DPlngScan. When set
(and it is set by default), DPlngScan always saves in the
"new" sprite format. If it is unset, it only uses the
"new" sprite format for 32k and 16M colour sprites.

Converting to 32bpp colour would be completely over the
top for a b/w scan, even 8bpp is big waste of memory.
Best not to change anything in DPlngScan, just resave
with "New sprites" disabled, and ArtWorks will load it.

I've now altered the default behaviour of DPlngScan to
avoid future problems. The project upon which I was engaged
has been temporarily suspended as other priorities have
overtaken it. However, I will return to it sooner or later
and the change in DPlngScan's default behaviour will save
me having to remember how I did it previously.

The large file sizes which resulted from my eralier
attempts have proved not to be a problem, at least not in
the long term, as the masked sprites were only used
temporarily in ArtWorks. They sat in the background layer
while I recreated them as vector illustrations. They were
technical illustrations which were relatively easy (if
sometimes tedious) to do. Once the illustration was
finished, the sprite was deleted from the file. The file
size was typically reduced by factors of 10^3 or 10^4.

ArtWorks should really be updated to accept "new format"
sprites with 256 colours or less, but there are more
useful things on my list for the tiny amount of
development time available these days.

That would be a useful improvement but, while there are
ways around it, not essential.

Thanks for your advice, Martin, and I'll look forward to
seeing you on Saturday.

John
