Peroxide solutions undergo fractional crystallization as they are frozen,
so whether the bulk material expands or contracts is basically a question
of which ice is winning. 65% being the balancing point suggests that
peroxide contracts about half as much as water expands.
Fractional crystallization is a means of purifying peroxide, with the
caveat that the peroxide crystals are wet with low percentage solution and
are difficult to dry. Patent application US 6780206 B2 suggests solving
this by washing the pure crystals with high test. How to do that and end up
with more high test than you started with is exactly the sort of chemical
engineering project that is the black hole of choosing peroxide
unnecessarily.
