Back in the late 70’s, one of my mentors was the former head of engineering at
Orenda engines, Joe Purvis. Orenda designed and built the engines for the Avro
Arrow among other projects. We used to hang out in my basement and draw up
conceptual designs of small 2 stage turbines based on available automotive
turbocharger components at the time. I proposed a design for a magnetic,
planetary gear reduction system for the designs but never pursued it. I think
those are available now as a commercial product.

Of course, we'll see many subsonic versions along the way.
