If you've gone to the trouble of building a gas generator and a turbine,
there's no obvious reason to interpose a generator and a motor between it
and the pump -- either a direct shaft connection or a gearbox is a lot
simpler, and likely to be a rather lighter way to handle that much power.
Ah, but you forget, where I want to end up. I want to fly to orbit in the
atmosphere without dropping things along the way.
Your correct, keeping the turbine and pump connected is lighter. Adding the
Generator/ElectricMotor to that same shaft is always an option. Batteries
power the Electric Motor that spins the Compressor to compress the fuel to
power the turbine to turn the Generator to charge the Battery for the
Engine that has a Throttle range of 1 to 100%, with a radical range of
Mixture ratios and Specific Impulses all on one shaft is lighter. But
doable?
Separating them allows each to be optimized separately and at different
times.
