Chopped wires are often referred to as staples. Chopped PAN based carbon fibers
will accomplish similar behavior. Uniform “voids” have been attempted using
micro balloons. The result is propellant with a propensity to DDT.

Thanks, my previous literature search had also suggested about 1” / sec. as a
practical maximum.
I did come across adding voids to accelerate the effective burn rate but a
quick calculation suggests that obviates the mass fraction benefit.
Wires are a good suggestion but don’t appear to safely get things in the
desired range as that would require putting a lot of heat well behind the flame
front. Chopped wires, perhaps?

1.1D. Once you start putzing with composite propellant that burns any faster

Does anyone have any sense of how fast AP/HTTP/Al can be made to reliability
burn at reasonable pressure (say 1000 psia)?
I’m noting that if one could get around 9-10” / sec. an end-burning grain might
makes sense with rather significant effects on propellant fraction for sounding
rockets....
