Regarding the cause of errors in the first place, I have a theory
(well, Andrew suggested it rather than me). Could someone who uses a
NAS and has unexplained errors occurring during a backup please check
something for me: are there files in the backup that are treated as
hidden by the NAS? In other words, do they disappear from view as soon
as they've been copied? I can't replicate any errors on my NAS here so
a bit of info from someone who can might go a long way towards fixing
it.
Having just posted here, I then saw this request from Alan. So...
I used Windows 10 to create a dot file, visible in Explorer with
View->Hidden ticked. Copied it to WBMyCloud NAS, where it was visible
from both Windows (.) and RISC OS (/, via LanMan98).
Then I used RISC OS to create a / file, added it to a large directory,
and ran its SafeStore backujp. That almost worked: the Tree file is
correct and the file was copied, but in the output it was renamed with
the slash replaced by a hyphen (as seen from both Windows and RISC
OS).
SafeStore's SubChars file has not been changed from distro. Its
contents are:
#format - single char followed by colon followed by
substitution string

No mention there of slash or dot or hyphen.
