Because the DNS address boxes were grey I thought it likely this was to do
with using DHCP as advised by Andrew. Just to see, I switched it to obtain
IP from host name but that did not un-grey the boxes.
I believe that Hermes can also get your domain details from Messenger's
configuration (and the values *it* sets), so it shouldn't be a problem.
Otherwise, you might be able to just *set inet$localdomain as needed. I
suspect (although don't have definitive proof) that it uses that for
building your host/domain combo.
For those reading this wondering "Why do you need to know what the name of
the computer is?", the SMTP protocol session begins with a "HELO"/"EHLO"
welcome/response which requires this information, and as Bob says, it is
considered important.
Note that there is another possibility - some mail servers now insist on
SPF checking which involves checking that the email address in the email
matches the SMTP server being used to send it. As such, you might want to
look at using smtp.mightyoak.org.uk if such a server exists (based on your
email address).
Indeed, I would strongly advise anyone to avoid using MS Office 365
servers, for many reasons. It is likely that alternatives are available
(eg. those provided by your ISP, or those provided with your domain).
Failing that, various RISC OS-friendly domain/email providers would be
happy to help I'm sure (eg. Orpheus, Xemik Solutions, Neil Spellings aka
XenCentric).
Kind wishes,
Andrew
