Also, just curious, when generating a matrix/shaper profile, wouldn't it
make more sense to limit the patch contents to each colorants channels (for
building the TRCs) and white patch only? Please correct me if I'm wrong but
if, for some reason, all I want is the simplest kind of monitor profile
mother earth can give me then, there is no need to throw in gazillion number
of patches with Neutral emphasis or Dark Neutral Emphasis kinds of options?
This is not a criticism on my part, this is me trying to make sense of
targen rich command line parameters.

Fitting is fitting. ArgyllCMS typically uses fitting that minimizes sum of 
delta E
squared. This applies to matricies and shapers. So if the device is not
strictly additive, using a wide range of combined channel values will
give an overall better average fit.

One last thing. Is there an option to get some other kind of white point
than D65? For the XYZ values? Even though they're strictly documentary? How
about a switch for D50?

I'm not sure what you mean. The PCS white point is D50 unless you override
with some other illuminant (for reflective devices) or some alternate
observer. Absolute display white point will be whatever it was adjusted
or calibrated to.
