Yeah, I went back and searched the list archive and did find another report of the same problem with RPi/Raspbian.  He said the problem wasn't present using an experimental version of Debian, so that points to something Raspbian is doing - either to the kernel or in userspace.  I may try a non-Raspbian kernel in a bit.  Will report back here so whatever I find will be available to/archived for others.
