It certainly sounds like a udev problem. It would be good to see a list of what other udev rules are active though, ie. ls /etc/udev/rules.d You might be able to locate which device it is by looking at the "devices" file located at either /dev/bus/usb or /proc/bus/usb with the device plugged in. You should be able to locate the device and then note its bus and port number, and then look at the permissions of the matching /dev/bus/usb/<bus>/<port>. Another thing you can do is to test the rules, see <http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html#testing> You can also turn on udev logging in the /etc/udev/udev/conf file, and I think the messages end up in the system log.
Is there a beginners guide to using the software anywhere? Most of the links I've found, including the extensive man pages that come withArgyll, assume that I know a lot more than I do.
What you seem to have is more a Linux/USB issue. Linux just isn't as user friendly in this regard as other operating systems, and the relatively rapid changes in the hotplug area, combined with the differences between different Linux distributions makes it hard to give advice with any confidence that it will be applicable to your system.
