ok I guess it's implied that they meant :
 
Film density -> Three 1-D LUTs -> 3x3 Matrix through a 3D LUT -> Scene XYZ
BTW, there's also the hardware LUT :)
 
this app supposedly could tell my projector how to behave internally :

maybe I'll be lucky and it will support 3D LUT
