there's no easy .cal > .icm conversion tool ?

You can't "convert" a calibration to a profile. A profile contains
characterization information of a device, while calibration changes the
behaviour of a device. They are different (complementary) things.

It so happens that Apple decided to bundle display calibration
into the display profile for system level convenience, and
that has become a de facto standard.

dispwin will load a .cal file into a display if you just want
to work with the calibration information.

If you really want a profile as well, then (with the
current Argyll snapshot) you need to go through the profiling
rigmarole you listed.

The next beta release will allow you to calibrate and
profile the display in one operation using dispcal, simplifying
things for casual use.
