Hi Georg
I’ve been very satisfied using the Colormunki and ArgyllCMS to generate my
profiles. Although I haven’t tried other hardware. I’ve found Argyll’s profiles
better than the Canon or Xrite i1Studio ones.
Aside from Torger’s excellent guide here's are a few of my experiences-
I found using 840 patches with Argyll’s high density print layout (printtarg
-h) worked best for me.
One problem with the colormunki is there’s no guide to align it to the patch
rows. I use a ruler as a guide to prevent misreads. I didn’t have any luck
using higher density patchsets (which you'll find on the web) than ArgyllCMS’.
I spent alot of time comparing profiles in various software packages, but a
profile would rank differently depending on which software was used. All of the
programs could show profile problems (like misreads, etc) but for comparing
similar profiles they (as a group) couldn’t pick a commom ‘winner’. For that
reason I print a reference image
(http://www.outbackphoto.com/printinginsights/pi048/essay.html,) for each
profile and judge my results from that.
Good Luck!
Harvey
