Hi,

As debian sid doesn't yet support version 2.2.0
and I wanted to play with my new i1pro3, I
downloaded the Argyll 2.2.0 code and executed
make. Besides a few warnings from ar and other
few messages about 64 bits, everything went
smooth.

you can do that, but if you just want to run Argyll,
it's more reliable to just use the binaries.

$ ./spotread
usb_open_port: open '/dev/bus/usb/002/054'
config 1 failed (-1) (Permissions ?)
initialise communications with instrument or
wrong instrument or bad configuration!
('Communications failure' + 'Communications
failure')
--------

permissions? This is unusual. So I became root

Very usual on Linux, due to its user hostile
(sorry, I mean - "super secure") design.

What else can I do?

Use the binaries (unless you are on a non-x86 platform
of course).

Follow the install instructions
<https://www.argyllcms.com/doc/Installing_Linux.html>

Note in particular the bit about updating the udev rules file
to accommodate new USB devices like the i1Pro3.

Cheers,
        Graeme Gill.
