Sure - but such a tool is not being used for creating a data set for an ICC
profile.
For this purpose I’d find it very helpful to be able to output a spec2cie
conversion
result that would be the apples instead of the oranges (or vice versa ;). If

the concept of Argyll, no problem, we’d continue using other applications that
fit the
purpose.
Sorry - I don't really see that spec2cie is the tool that you think it is. The
output
of spec2cie is a .ti3 file, and that is a format specifically intended for
creating
ICC profiles from, hence it outputs XYZ or the equivalent pseudo-absolute D50
L*a*b*
values.
Adding some option to do otherwise and make the output not suitable for building
ICC profiles just seems to be an opportunity to lead people into trouble.
Happy to add an option to spotread to display L*a*b* values converted with the
same
white point used as the illuminant, since it makes sense there, and corresponds
exactly with your usage examples above.
