Yes, that's right.
If the ink sequence used during profiling
was (MK or KM)+(CY or YC),
the problem has the strict solution.
If so, then printing with the same ink sequence should work correctly.
If not - there will be only approximate solution.
Other potential issue IMO depend on the printing technology. Inkjets may have
more than 4 colorants although the dirver/RIP is just fed with CMYK. It is
proprietary how CMYK are separated to the native colorants then. Stochastic
inkjet screens may invole a vector quantization, dithering all colorants
together, and not independently. For a press, I guess the alignment of the
rasters also matters, in addition to the order of the separations.
