Software vs hardware comes down to location and bit depth of Look-Up Tables.
Most video cards only have 8bit registers but most hardware LUTs have at
least 10bit registers. NEC and Eizo have 12bits LUTs. So, in theory, the
finer the LUT the finer the calibration that can be have.

Maybe this is a naïve question. Is there a major difference between a
hardware and software monitor profile implementation? I confess to using
NEC Spectraview software as it's quick and the results appear to be quite
good in terms of photographic output. I've used Argyll in the past to
create software profiles but it's a more lengthy process.

NEC has always refused to let me have their SDK :(

I'll second the NEC suggestion and be willing to contribute funds of my own.

I've been happy with NEC monitors and will contribute funds to purchase one
of those. I assume since their basic software Spectraview has not changed
over the years other than some minor fixes that the addressability across
the line of wide gamut "photo" monitors is the same. The price range is
also pretty reasonable depending on the size of the monitor. Since my
desktop is somewhat small, I find that I really do not need anything over 24
inches.

I'll kick in some funds to get this started.

Which displays would you most like to be sent? Or, perhaps less
impractically, which displays would you be most inclined to buy if enough
targeted donations could be rounded up?
