I understand that there could be room for adjustments in function of the environment, but I don't understand the latter sentence. Calibration is about everybody having a standardised viewing setup, so when he postprocesses the photos in a certain way he's sure that other people with proper calibration see things in the same way. If you calibrate with a dimmer monitor at 80 cdm2, I suspect that the way you fix shadows will make them appear brighter than they should on my monitor at 120 cdm2.
