Possibly because they are relying on the hardware only having 8 bit table entries. If you look, the top 8 bits of the 16 bit values are a linear curve, so 8 bi table hardware sees the same values in either case.
The way I obtained those strange values is not by pressing the "reset" button, but unistalling every color management program and rebooting the system!
Might be an operating system/graphics driver issue (assuming 8 bit table entries). Graeme Gill.
