I could not find any place where it is set, neither in dot files nor in
/etc. Must be compiled into shell? BTW, I am using tcsh so all variables
are exported. But the man page says HOSTTYPE is obsolete and will be
removed in future version (!?).

If I login as another user which uses bash then there is no HOSTTYPE at all.

Yes, it prints:

Unable to locate the 32 bit X11 library files

and proceeds to build 64-bit binaries OK (which is what I want :-)).

/usr/lib64 for 64-bit
/usr/lib   for 32-bit
