When the internal light source is off the EyeOne Pro calibration base acts as a light-proof cap, allowing estimation of the black level. I believe an instrument needs to do a black-level calibration for emissive readings. For reflective readings both a black-level calibration and a calibration with illuminant on, measuring the white tile are necessary.
