Forgive me if this is too obvious, but it's not simply a matter of a profile
conversion to suit the display (ie., sRGB)…?

Worth checking, but, no, that’s not it. It’s a completely color-managed
workflow start to finish. The final sRGB-tagged image is a perfect visual match
for the initial out-of-camera image tagged with the camera’s scene-specific

Rather, it’s a matter of watercolors having a much more limited tonal range
than displays. The blackest black you can get from a watercolor is nowhere near
as black as the blackest black you can get from a quality inkjet print…and
displays have a much greater dynamic range than prints. Were the artist
starting from scratch working on the display, she’d use the full dynamic range
of the display; she wants to see her watercolors magically transformed into
what she would have done in the digital medium.
