In was introduced in 2.4 along owth other color management options.
It's right below "Display profile" combo box oin the Color Management
section of the Prefences dialog.

There are different ways to assign a color profile to X, from console
tools like xicc to GNOME Color Manager and KDE's  Oyranos based
configuration applet.
