I'd guess that they mean the calibration curves ('vcgt' tag), which is
typically loaded into the graphics card hardware. This affects the tonal
response of all non-color managed applications. Color managed applications
will convert from source colorspace to the display space using the ICC profiles,
getting the color they want.
This is not to be confused with the ICC tags that describe tonal response
in the context of a color profile.
