Well, all profile types can be used to correct colors < 100% stimulus, otherwise ICC colormanagement would be pretty useless :) LUT profiles are just often better at it (in terms of color accuracy, and if enough test patches were used in their creation), because they model the device behavior more closely than simple curves or a gamma function. That said, a display with a reasonably additive behavior can often be characterized with a shaper + matrix profile just fine.
