I'd guess that Adobe didn't feel like reverse engineering various RAW formats (and having deep pockets, opening themselves up to potential law suits in the USA), so they made use of the raw format knowledge or code in DcRaw. I'd be rather surprised if any of the de-mosaicing or other pixel processing in Photoshop are based on DcRaw through. Graeme Gill.
