Oh, man...no joke! Getting a not-miserable shot of a chart basically means
starting with a studio that looks a lot like the interior of a camera.
I have got good results by taking a series of pictures with different exposures
or apertures. The colour checker grey scale gives us a set of small tone
curves. The flare is different on each exposure, but if you start at the top of
the tone curve of the lightest image that doesn’t clip, and then try to fit the
darker points of the tone curve below to that, then the point at which you join
the two is probably well clear of the point where flare becomes significant,
and the camera may have software bodges to smooth out the tone curve. The angle
of the lighting also becomes more significant with the darker patches. 45
degrees is good and easy to do.
It works for me anyhow. I got a tone curve of a Sony F35 that sat almost
precisely on the nominal curve over 16 stops. But maybe that’s how Sony
calibrated it.
