Oh, man...no joke! Getting a not-miserable shot of a chart basically means
starting with a studio that looks a lot like the interior of a camera.
But there's a simple tool that you can use to uncover (and thereby help you
fix) all your problems: a mirror.
Replace your chart with a mirror and release the shutter. If your studio is
perfect, the resulting image will be perfectly black. If all you have is an
image of the camera underexposed by at least a few stops, that's "good enough."
If you see any of the studio itself, and especially if you see any of the
lighting equipment, you've got your work cut out for you.
As a bonus...a studio perfectly set up in this way for profiling is also
perfectly set up for reprography....
