I don't think it's really a hardware LUT anymore with current VGA
cards and Windows 10. When I load a LUT which deliberately cuts the
peak brightness by a lot (and dramatically changes the white point
too) it's obvious for the naked eye how the mouse cursor remains
unaffected. If the whole image was processed as "raw" the cursor
couln't remain so bright.
At least on Linux, the mouse image sits in a hardware overlay and not
the frame buffer which runs through the video graphics cars luts.
Guessedly the situation is not that different on windows. For me (on
Linux/X11) the cursor is always unaffected as you describe and I _can_
choose GPU verus VCGT.
