isn't there some kind of ultra-transparent foil to put over the sample to
protect device and sample?

So I could get good results even when pointing the device without a ruler
or doohickey directly on the target?
If by, "pointing," you mean, "hand-holding it above the surface and aiming it
in the general direction," then, no. But if you mean, "setting the device
directly on the sample," then, yes. But is the device going to damage the
sample? Is the sample going to leave gunk behind on the device? You'd be
surprised at how often those are real-world problems, even when using the
ruler or the doohickey.
