I don't recall the exact command line to
dispcal, but the message was: "Unable to
determine Video LUT entry bit depth."
Oh - OK - that's the routine that tries to measure
the actual video depth. Without taking huge amounts
of time, it will fail if the measurements are not
consistent enough to draw a conclusion. This typically
comes down to the resolution and stability of the
instrument, as well as the stability of the display.
linear.cal. However, in the meanwhile I have
updated my debian and installed the latest
nVidia driver. Since then, dispwin -r tells that
"We don't have access to the VideoLUT."
Hmm. That's bad. You won't get very far with
calibration with that situation. Are you using the
V1.9.0 Beta dispwin ?
Does this mean, that the video LUT is in the
video card rather than in the monitor?
Yes. Access to display LUTs is not very standardized,
not documented, and hard to access via the display
connection (there's no MSWin API for that, and OS X
is crude, and Linux it's somewhat obscure).
USB connection to the display is likely
to be more reliable, but again none of that is
documented, and nothing is standard.
