Hi,

So what is
the role of the rendering intent here? And if so, why the absolute
colorimetric intent?

an ICC profile typically has two colorimetric intents, one that
is white point relative, and the other that is not white point
relative. So when looking up device to color values in a profile
to compare to the instrument readings, absolute colorimetric
is needed to make it an apples to apples comparison.

This has nothing directly to do with gamut mapping, which
typically has more to do with the other two intents, perceptual
and saturation.

Cheers,
