the log window to see the command line parameters given to spotread.

Sounds odd. You aren't measuring in reflective mode using spotread are you

By the way: I read in the documentation that this device should be
capable to measure ambient light. How is it done with argyllcms?

Fit the ambient adapter, and use spotread -a.
