ich habe eine E-Mail bezüglich des englischsprachigen RISC OS-Magazins
Archive bekommen, weil ich vor vielen Jahren einmal ein Abo gehabt
hatte. Jim Nagel, der zweite Chefredakteur, ist ja verstorben, wie
Martin Würther in comp.sys.acorn.announce bekanntgab (warum eigentlich
ausgerechnet der 'Programmier' von ArtWorks 2 und Techwriter?).
Ich hätte Jim einmal fast selbst getroffen, weil er das Schloss
Herrenchiemsee in meiner Heimat besucht hatte. Leider verpassten wir uns
damals knapp. War eine blöde Geschichte. Und jetzt ist es zu spät.

Subject: The future of Archive magazine
Greetings to all Archive members.
Most of you will likely be aware of the news that my father Jim Nagel
died peacefully on March 21 of this year. We've very appreciative of
the messages of support we've received.
We have some ideas for the future of Archive magazine -- both for the
short term and for the long term -- and we encourage you, as
subscribers and those involved with the magazine, to offer your
thoughts and input.
You may be wondering where your subscription is left. Unfortunately,
the simple truth is that there is no money to offer refunds. The
funeral bill more than saw to that.
We don't like this at all. I formulated a rough plan, and then my
brother Chris and I had conversations with a few contributors and
others, and there is enthusiasm for the idea to put together one more
issue. This week I've been getting started. More on this plan below.
After that issue is released, we're hoping to see the magazine
continue under new editorship and we are talking to a couple of
interested parties.
ISSUE 6

The plan is to put together issue 6 with exactly the same chain of
software my dad used. Or as close as I can manage. I'm going to keep
it as close to the same style as I can.
There are a backlog of articles, some of which were some way through
being edited. I've started reading through these and I'm trying to get
a feel for what should be included. Some already have query marks on
them, which I'll try to follow up. I'll email the authors of things I
think I'd like to include, just to make sure it's still okay! Other
articles are many years old, and I'm not sure they're still relevant.
- If you have contributed something and are keen to get it published
please let me know, and I'll bump it up the queue. No promises to
include it since we have limited time and space, but I'll do what I
can. Let me know also if it needs to be updated.
- On the other hand, if you submitted something in the past that
wasn't printed yet and you know it to no longer be relevant, please
also let me know to save me some time!
- If you have a new article you'd like to see published, by all means
send it. We'd love to have something really fresh.
There are also a few bits and pieces written by my dad, I suppose
waiting for a corner of a page which needed filling. I'll include some
of that if appropriate.
News -- I'm out of touch with the platform and its goings-on. I have a
very rough idea just from reading the magazines and helping proofread
them over the years, and also from what I've picked up in recent
conversations, but I've been 100% a Linux user for many many years
now. I'm absolutely the wrong person to write news. But we've had a
couple of generous offers on this front, and also for a London show
report.
The plan was to distribute this new issue only as a PDF. For it to be
the only issue ever not to have been printed would be a shame, but
there just wasn't the money to print it. But during conversations with
contributors we have found ourselves with potential funding for
printing and mailing. So, excitingly, it is looking realistic to get
this issue into subscribers' hands on paper after all!
BEYOND ISSUE 6

We're keen that whoever takes over will keep the same spirit of the
magazine -- and they will surely know better than we do what this
means. Hopes are that it will remain a contributor magazine, very much
a journal really. But we are also optimistic that it will shift focus
a little, as we believe it was in the process of doing, gaining a
little more Raspberry Pi content and attracting new subscribers.
It will be a decision for whoever takes over whether to continue from
24:7 or to start from 25:1, or whether to change the numbering scheme
entirely. But however they're numbered, we hope many more issues will
come.
A couple of names were passed to us of people potentially interested
in taking the magazine forward. We are in contact with them and things
are looking very promising. But we realized we had not put out a call
for anyone else interested to talk to us, and we would hate to find
out later that someone felt strongly about it but didn't have a chance
to put their name forward. So consider this a call:
- If you would like to take over Archive magazine, and are serious
about it, please get in contact as soon as you can.
DVD 23+
-------
We're aware that DVD 23 was never finished. Unfortunately, we don't
have the skills or time to do this. While we have some opinions on
what to do with the back catalogue, the plan is to allow whoever takes
over to make the relevant decisions.

Keith Johnson (of the East Fleggs) has offered to continue to moderate
the Archive-on-line mailing list.
