DOS is actively supported by datalight. they have two
ROM-DOS versions: 6.22 and 7.10. the difference is
that
v6.22 only supports FAT16, while v7.10 supports FAT32.
both support long filenames.
they even have tcp/ip connectivity called "sockets"
which i think is incompatible with what arachne uses.
it comes with http and ftp servers plus network
utilities. i have not tested it yet.
there is very little difference in terms of usage
between msdos and romdos. i use it as a bootdisk for
troubleshooting, dos abandonware games, and mp3's
using mpxplay. my mp3's need lfn's.
CONS:
- installer needs win32 to unzip to a folder. it dumps
two disk images, a pdf manual, and a folder of all the
romdos files.
- xms v2 is supported, meaning up only to 64mb of ram
is recognized using himem.sys. if you ask for it, they
send an alpha version of xms3.sys, an xms v3 driver
from fdxms of freedos.
- some file dos managers (file wizard) can not handle
their implementation of lfn. dos navigator is ok.
- some missing tools: defrag, debug, fc -- share.exe
is present.
- with romdos, i can only get 581kb base memory free.
with msdos, 628kb.
- some programs using dos extenders may not work.
- arachne installer does not work, but arachne works
if installed from another DOS.
it is not a perfect msdos or pcdos replacement but
they have an excellent technical support system,
considering it is *free* product.
