The one patient I saw with a hemipelvectomy plus limb salvage was in his early
30’s so a somewhat different scenario. He was not full WB, but the salvaged
limb was able to provide toe touch stability for gait and seemed to me to be
preferable to LE amputation.

I’ve treated many hemipelvectomies as well as internal hemipevectomies but I’m
retired and not as up on current procedures. MD Anderson still does many
internal hemipelvectomies. A phone call to the physical therapy department
(713-792-3192) should be able to put you in contact with Alex Penny or one of
the other PTs who work ortho inpatient.

yr old, healthy, home health patient has a diagnosis of a giant osteosarcoma in
her hip . She relayed that her current surgical options were hemipelvectomy
with salvage of LE from one surgeon vs hemipelvectomy with LE amputation. She
is meeting with both surgeons and looking for any information regarding
functional outcomes to make a choice between these two options or choose to
refuse surgery. Any thoughts or recommendations?
