On the documentation front, I've been in communication with a friend who used to work at IBM in California. He was engaged in applied math and IGES problems but happened to be located down the hall from the APT group. It was a long time ago in a galaxy far away but he is trying to reconnect with some of them to find out if any dusty manuals might still exist in someone's box of keepsakes. It's likely the manual Dave C mentioned,

Just for interest: the labs at Los Gatos or Santa Maria, someplace else?

My friend was working with the CADAM/CATIA technical (not sales engineers) guys. My fading memory is that he was living in the Los Angeles area at the time. Los Gatos seems too far away.

As a standards man, I had to love it. There was IBM selling the aerospace industry two leading CAD systems that couldn't talk to each other; hence their sudden interest in IGES. IBM's usual marketing stance was that they *were* the standard ("you can't go wrong buying IBM") but they had to depend on an industry-consensus standard to keep their customers happy.

Kent
