[apt4ssx8] History question - CAM-I

Could anyone shed some light on what role CAM-I played in the history
of APT? I had a little interaction with them in 1999 and almost spent
some money on a suspect magnetic tape with APT source code on it. I
declined, when I realized that it I was going to have a hard time
converting the VAX tape over to some other format.
