Yes, but from Pluto e.g. in Article View menu => Message => Save
as.

I think this might be the problem.  Bear in mind that a normal RO
user has no idea that the internal format of message files is
different from normal text files.  If this "Save as" option
generated files that couldn't sensibly be opened (in eg !Edit)
users would have been unhappy.

It's so long since I used Pluto that I can't remember the options
elsewhere, but maybe there's a message export (or something) that
saves messages in a form that make sense to Pluto and other email
clients?
Yes. From Boxes - Article List => Export => Selected Articles. In
the Export box I selected Header Original, the other settings I
left as default. I've dropped it into SparkFS-Zip and attached it.
I had a look and it contains Carriage Return line terminations!

Articles extracted from Pluto in any way may not be *exactly* the
same as the article that was read in to Pluto. In particular I am
unsure what the line ends are.

The only place that articles are to be found that are as AntiSpam
wrote them are either in the !POPstar.MailDir.spool.mail.text before
debatch, or in the !Pluto.Backup.Mailyymmdd.hh-mm-ss directory for a
debatch done at that time. 

Note that these directories are kept for a number of days,
depending on your settings in Pluto -> Preferences -> News/Mail.

My recommendation is that the number of days should be at least twice
the number of days between full external backups of the Pluto
Articles file, if you do not want to lose incoming articles after a
full restore.
