Going from 49 to 0. Weird.

There should be something like:

> STAT
< +OK .. .....

at the beginning of the logging for that session. What did it say?
How many messages did the server report (the first number folling the
+OK).

If you're using UIDL values, what was the sequence following:

> UIDL
< +OK

Do you have a maximum number of e-mails/bytes set (Mailbox->General
frame of the Choices window)?
